Help me choose a windows laptop

No need to spend that much unless it in includes a fancy monitor. Just get one of the Lenovos further up the thread.
Pretty much everything has HDMI for an external monitor these days.

If you want a nice laptop, the Dell XPS range is the standard choice. They have great spec and exquisite screens. That said, a mate who has one has had no end of problems, but then the guarantee is good!

Personally I would go cheaper and get a decent screen, as I hate the form factor. The Lenovo business machines at £800-odd are great.

The guys at work (after I’d got past the “durr, Linux”, “durr, Mac” - being IT nerds it’s like here but with even more coffee) are saying Dell, probably XPS.

Cheers, synchronised posting.

Have you considered an all in one PC? They are usually 24" touch screen things. If you don’t need portability they can be a lot cleaner looking at home.

Work just gave me a Lenovo Yoga X390 (i7) which is very nice. Super light, great screen (1920x1080) and 3x USB C and 1x USB A

The i5 is probably more in the price range you mention. Would happily own one myself.

I have had a couple of laptops from Dell’s consumer range and they were dreadful. Buggy and unreliable.

However my current work laptop (Latitude 5490) is excellent. The business range is much better built. (Still not as good as the MacBook though!)

Already got one upstairs. This is a second machine that will need to move around :+1:

The 2020 XPS is super nice. Bezel has almost completely gone. I’ve got the 2019 machine which is nice but the latest one is king. They start around a grand, heading quickly into the stratosphere.

“standard for whom” i stopped procuring Dells last year, due to so many RMAs. Our standard choice ATM is Lenovo

we are ordering similar to these:

https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkbook-series/Lenovo-ThinkBook-15-IML/p/20SM000FUK

Not that anyone gives a crap, but I ended up going for a Dell XPS 13, not the “new” model. So by the sounds of it the same thing that @browellm has, but perhaps a different screen size.

The “new” one looks like it has marginally better graphics, one less USB C hole, and half the memory (on the standard kit-out). And costs more.

I guess with the USB thing you’re supposed to use a USB monitor as a hub if you’re at a desk.

Arrived about 7pm.

Blimey, Windows laptops have changed a bit since the last time I had one (2007/8?).

But you can rely on McAfee being dogshit that’s deliberately difficult to remove.

Does that come pre-installed? How utterly shit.

Yes. No option with Dell. I presume McAfee pay for it to happen.

It’s a pain in the crack.

Don’t take it when you go sunbathing in the park like this German bloke did who had it in a yellow bag.
