Torquay?
Got it in one
Weâve started watching White Lotus series 2 which seems to be set in Taormina & it makes me want to go back there. We went as apart of an interrailing holiday back in about 1987. Itâd be interesting to see how much had changed.
Havenât seen that but someone did suggest I do.
Itâs quite amusing satire but maybe watch the 1st series (set in a hotel in Hawaii) first
We are headed to Scotland in July, and need a weekâs getaway for the family (6 and 12) in between stays in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We will be renting a car so are pretty mobile.
Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for where we could head?
Weâd prefer self catering, and would rater die than head to a center parcs kinda place. Some outdoorsy experiences are essential, and a decent pub wouldnât go amiss.
Aviemore, Mull, Black Isle, East Neuk have been mentioned
Any suggestions??
We had rather more than a decade renting one sort of ruin or another for a week. There used to be a charity that restored historic buildings which breached the building regs so irremediably that they couldnât be used for permanent housing, but somehow could still be rented out to holidaymakers.
We had great Scottish holidays both here

and here
Sadly desirable places (historic, beautifully-restored, in scenic environments and/or close to attractive cities) are likely to be expensive and fully booked months in advance for the summer school holidays.
But the idea of looking for somewhere quirky and memorable still applies.
There is some good mountain biking, including rental, to be had in summer using ski lifts at places like Ft William. Graded runs fur all abilities.
There are a couple of places up the west coast that will do fast semi rigid boat rides as well as whale watching. There are also places that will take you fur coastal swims, bit like canyoning but using rocks and the sea.
If you are looking to stay in a town Aviemore and Fort William arenât really much to look at but have a lot of outdoor activities nearby.
Fort William is a bit more mountain bike focused.
The area surrounding Aviemore has loads of kids stuff and the Cairngorms are stunning if you get the right weather.
East Neuk is beautiful lots of beaches, golf courses small harbour towns.
Personally I wouldnât do Mull for a full week, you can take a day trip from Oban or even stay a night or too but a full week would be boring for the kids.
Oban is a lot more scenic as a town, better pubs and restaurants. You can do a bit of island hopping, sea safaris, fishing trips etc as itâs right on the coast. You can head inland to Loch Awe for flat water sports.
Not really any experience of the Black Isle other than driving past it.
Personally Iâd go for Oban if you are looking to explore and do some sea based trips.
Aviemore area if you are looking to do more kids activity based stuff though the town itself is pretty fugly and a lot smaller than Oban.
Whatever you decide let me know and I can hopefully give some half decent recommendations for things to do nearby.
Trossachs.
Same to you
We are off that way for us hols in August. Gonna stay at Luss on the edge of Lomond. Be nice that. And a bit midgy.
Were you not up that way a few months ago?
This, you need this.
Eight hours my arse⌠Lucky if it will last two but still better than nowt. And one of these in case it gets really tasty.
Nope. Going in August.
This might be worth doing if you head up to Oban
The weather here has been decidedly dodgy, 3 days beautiful sunshine and 4 days overcast and a stiff breeze. Wank!
Plenty to do in Paignton though.
Didnât see the full stop between breeze and wank, my mistake but had a chuckle.
My nameâs not Graeme
