Holidays

I tried to fudge a night in Glasgow on the Sunday. No dice

I think that one is on The List.

I so wish both were true

You won’t miss much - Glasgow these days is a shit hole.

Don’t miss the seafood stall round the back of the station between spoons and the ferry terminal. The Oban Inn is a cracking wee pub but is touristy and gets very busy. If you want a more traditional Scottish fishing town pub (ie bit of a shithole but lots more locals) try Auleys.

This is the place… 10 mins prior to my post @MrKettle

Not your normal setting for cuisine, but you need to have mussels or the like from here.

P.s. having last been there 11 years ago, am jealous.

We were going to go to Helsinki early May but decided with possibility of flight cancellations etc that being 3 hours flying time away wasn’t worth the risk at the moment. Current plan is staycation in one of the posh London hotels instead, just need to decide which one and where. Will be doing the Tower of London, after 29 years finally taking advantage of the free entrance to Westminster Abbey I have never done, plus some of the smaller museums like the Dickens and Sir Joan Soane. Sort of dress rehearsal for retirement, but in fancy accommodation.

Oban distillery tour was also good when we went.

Couple I done years ago:
Browns
The Savoy

More recently:
Great Scotland Yard - rooms are nice if perfunctory but the cocktail bars and ā€œsecret jazz barā€ are pretty good here.

I suspect there are better off the beaten path but I’m not so clued in these days

Yeah Browns is on the list, the rooms at the Cafe Royale look nice and also the Pan Pacific in the City looks nice, with interesting views. Did look at Great Scotland Yard, I could save on breakfast and just get the excellent breakfast at work but that sort of defeats the point.

I guess Jim is the Savoy expert as I think that was one of his last projects.

Here’s Skye looking suitably lunar in October 2003

and I guess we must have come back through Spean Bridge

My father trained at Achnacarry.

St. Pancras hotel is quite nice too but not really a ā€˜destination’ hotel imv.

Yeah the Standard and the hotel in the actual station are both meant to be good. But far too close to Yvonne workplace for her comfort.

You might be a bit disappointed if you are looking for Stornaway black pudding or some haggis…

Monday – Sunday 8:30am – 11:00am
We offer a selection of light breakfast options including toast, cereal, pastries and fruit from our bar. If you would prefer a continental or cooked breakfast our team will be pleased to recommend restaurants nearby.

Stayed at Isle of Eriska a long time ago. Now that was memorable.

The Lanesborough is the obvs answer :upside_down_face:

Agreed. Pretty decent but not what they promote as super luxurious.

Seriously? It’s the Langham or go home !

Yikes!

Many years ago I was on a company thing and the next morning a colleague was trying to order the ā€œfull Scottish but no haggisā€.

Oh, that’ll be the the full English then.

Ooh, feel the burn.
