As soon as I ticked that box on the M&S site, sorry we cannot quote.
Same with Aviva.
Just had an interesting chat with John Lewis insurance.
It seems that because of the value of the hifi, I have to have all electrical equipment protected by surge protectors, to be insured for damage caused by the electrical supply!!
Anyone else had this from their insurer?
And the quote was astronomical.
I have mine connected through the boxes Sodders made. When I told the insurers the premium went up!
(for the more literal minded this is a joke)
Tell them you’re using NVA surge protectors
Because our house is timber clad and listed, the quote from John Lewis starts at £1500. It ended up more than double that.
And here we are again.
Got bumped to a different insurance product by Direct Line when contents value exceeded 75K
Had a chat with the agent who said that the policy was loaded because of the value of the hifi and record collection.
He suggested getting normal cover but getting the music related stuff insured separately on a specialist policy, then said that he couldn’t recommend one ![]()
Anyone got specialist cover for hifi and records only?
No, but I do have cover the actual repacement value of our contents - £75k is way too low for you Kev. Your shoes and watches alone… ![]()
Do make sure you’re not underinsured, you’ll really regret it, in the (unlikely, I know) event your house burning down.
M&S Bank’s premier contents insurance offers extensive protection including cover for:
- Accidental damage
- Unlimited contents (inner limits apply)
- Unlimited garden contents, including theft or damage to plants
- Dependent relatives’ possessions – if they are in a nursing home
- Students’ contents while at college or university
- Visitors’ belongings
Our standard contents insurance costs less; however, the cover limits are lower.
Might be of use Kev?
Thank you, That was very useful
John Lewis platinum isn’t cheap but great cover level and they pay out well when there is an issue in our experience
My premium with AA went from £300 to £500 without rhyme nor reason so they got ditched last week. Went with Policy Expert who quoted £300 for slightly better cover. I bumped the voluntary excess up from £200 to £450 and it took another £100 off the premium. I would probably never claim for anything less than £1k anyway, I’d just replace. The insurance is there to cover me in the event of major disaster, an extra £250 on excess will be a drop in the ocean. If a hefty excess doesn’t bother you that much it’s worth bumping it up to reduce your premium.
My cover with HSBC is £150 per year for:
£80,000 general contents
£50 excess (increasing the excess to the max of £500 didn’t reduce the quote)
£20,000 for watches/jewellery
PITA is that I had to list every item over £1500
I do the same it’s just there as a worst case backup for fire/theft.
Total pisstake from LV this year.
They sent me a cryarsing letter before the renewal quote came out so I knew they were going to pull some nonsense.
Last year £466, this year £792. No claims made.
No thanks, lads.
I think we’re with them too.
A lot of people on the estate here have had ridiculous jumps in their insurance.
The consensus on the WhatsApp group is to try Saga or Aviva, with the obvious proviso regarding age with Saga.
I’ve just punted them off a bridge and gone with Nationwide. Not only are they £40 cheaper than last year’s LV quote, they let me pay by DD with 0% interest and the policy terms seem far better too.
I’m keeping a list for when it comes to renewal time. I just put Nationwide on it - thank you for the tip.
I Like John lewis - they seem happy to pay out when needed but premium isnt the cheapest

My last renewal was Halifax Ultimate for £45/ mth which had good coverage plus unlimited contents cover.
My car is insured with Saga and I’m 49.
