Hoops Speaker Roundabout

Both baffles finished off, holes cut for the two bass ports and one for the Neutrik 4-pole connector.
By the time I’d cut the hole for the terminal I forgot I was going to rebate it in, doh!

First enclosure all glued up!

From Axminster tools, got 2x 600mm, 4x 1000mm and 2x 1500mm. Indulgence but that’s what the voucher was for!

I have clamp envy, who even knew that was a thing?

Women everywhere comparing smear test experiences?

My updated plan, been playing around with design on the edges, 10mm round over on the sides and 10mm chamfer top and bottom. I like the idea of a black baffle, possibly with the black MDF and plywood sides.

Started the routing on the first cab while the second is gluing.
First roundover went well and looked good…

Then on the chamfer, started on the rear/bottom unless it went wrong…not so well, couple of bits broke off and looked terrible. Was using the slowest speed, and a little at a time. Could be the old and very cheap router bits I got as a set £15 from Amazon years ago.

So I just applied the roundover all over. I think I’ll do this on the second cabinet and just hide the first…

I think you should do birch ply on close to the fastest speed. And then make sure that you go the right way. It’s very easy to get burns etc

I’ll try it on a faster speed. These cabs were made out of two offcuts I had so if I continue to fuck it up, not too much lost other than a few evenings work

The glue and multi direction grain on ply is hard work on router bits, cheap ones don’t stay sharp for long. I’ve spent good money on a couple of router bits recently, they’re a joy to use and feel safer (than cheap ones).

These are excellent All Router Bits – Radiantools

Thanks, I’ll check them out. Limited options at the moment as my router is a 1/4" shank.

What about creating a frame and covering it with speaker cloth so you get something the Shahinian obelisk pyramid or hawk top shape

I really like the look of obelisks

This, good router bits and high speed and high feed rate. I tend to make a few shallow cuts rather than one big cut.

Leave one final cut off a mil or less that you can apply to all edges as a final cut. Do this last cut right at the end just before you finish using sand paper. That way any minor workshop rash can be managed as well.

Thanks for the tips on the router bits everyob, I shall look into it for the future!

Any recomendations on a simple to apply finish, something matt would be ideal.

I always just oil it, if you have decent ply. It brings out the grain nicely, protects and removes any sharp bits. Screwfix Danish oil for me.

Worth a look, you can order samples too.

Ive used Osmo oil on ply, I’ll check tin and take a pic of the finish i got tomorrow

Osmo is fabulous stuff, and you really don’t need a lot.

I’ve ordered a small tin of the Osmo and will give it a try!

I’m pretty sure they make it quite clear on their instructions, but you really do only want to be applying the thinnest of coats of this stuff. If needs be you can do another, but getting that coat as thin as possible really is the best for optimum finish.
