Any more than 2 slices and you run the risk of the toast being too cold for the application of butter.
See murrayjohnson up thread that explains the importance of deltaT.
Ideally, you insert a pair of slices, await pop up, extract one, butter it and eat whilst buttering the second, once finished buttering put another two slices in, slurp tea… repeat until satisfaction is reached.

surely that depends on how many of you there are - buttering in parallel is possible.

As long as you police the buttering all should be ok

What we need is a buttering workshop, rolled out nationally.
Testing and re-registering every 2 years. This will eradicate the loose and lazy butterers.
