I bought these a while back to play with but life has kinda got in the frickin’ way -
Having heard Chris’s fine efforts this has me once again weighing up pros and cons of keeping my AGs versus a custom build project, which is of course an enormous rabbit hole where the only guarantees are faff, frustration, and wallet emptying.
Yeah, the other dimension of any design spec’ is that its going to have to look good and fit into the room. That still leaves plenty of scope for a very nice sounding horn, but horn bass and floor to ceiling plywood boxes are out of scope. The box bit is going to have to look like a nice bit of finished furniture, with wider options available for the horn type.
Whichever, I know that there’s pros and cons to balance, you might gain in one area and lose in another. The AGs are very refined and the bass goes pretty low without roll off and is well integrated, whilst still being pretty dynamic. Where Chris’s horn gains is the extra dynamic snap, which is more raw and palpable, where they lose is the bass integration and refinement.
I’m still in the exploring the concept stage and casting my over over the various box bit options as that is likely to be the hardest element to nail down given preferences above.
From a sound perspective I totally agree, once heard it becomes a phantom to try to chase. However, and not just solely based on Ritchie’s own personal odyssey of pain and disappointment, but also on trying to make sure that reality of what is practical and likely isn’t overshadowed by an elusive dream of never, I’ve ruled this out (perfect as the enemy of good or even excellent).
I’ve been setting the worst kind of expectation with Hel for the last 6 months using various wall sized Altecs etc. She has warmed to the AGs, especially their unique ‘not blue’ quality over this period.
Goad her with images of a full Mirrophonic system and work back from there. Pretty much anything will look (although not sound) more domestically acceptable.
Hey, my pain is more that having climbed a fair way up the mountain, circumstances changed and I’ve had to dismantle it. It was very worthwhile, and brilliant fun. At it’s best it sounded magnificent. What I want is something with a smaller footprint and that works better near field. I learnt so much doing it, and a lot of that is being able to choose my compromises with more confidence.
I wouldn’t put anyone off starting a project. For one thing, the bang for buck is fantastic.
Haha, well I’ve given up on that as I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I don’t have the space. And not having a decent horn system has made me lose interest in hifi things. Plus work and shit got in the way.
But if other folks want something that’s kind of motivation to pull my finger out and maybe I’ll even build slamming for myself. Of course the other distraction is things like the Danley multiple entry horns.
