How big is the room going to be? (Is the right question )
Will a 12a marry up with a floor horn? Cutoff about 100Hz should work with both, shouldn’t it? Three ways, dead easy.
Disclaimer: I think my five way system sounds better than your 16a system did
7.5m x 5m x 2.5m high + vaulted ceiling. Yay!!
Isn’t the whole purpose of a room build to construct a bespoke environment perfectly suited to the speakers?
Surely the only question is one balcony or two?
On the other hand Japan man crams all the good shit up to the rafters and uses them like headphones which is also win.
I would treat the floor horn as a sub. And looking to cross 60Hz or so to another mid bass horn. 12A is then too big in this context. So a smaller lower mid from 200 up. Essentially something like my old YL system but with the bass replaced by a couple of bass horns.
Ritchie style straight horns would allow physical time alignment, making amps and crossover easier - doesn’t force you down the digital route.
Or, a 15A sized horn could meet them at 80Hz or so
Seems a bit of a waste of the 555, doing scarcely over an octave? Would it work better with a 6-800Hz horn crossing well over 1k?
But that’s what I would do on first iteration: bass horn, 80-300 straight mid bass with a 12 or 15", 300-1200 on a 2" compression driver, 1.2-8k S2, compression or ribbon tweeter.
This is amazing, excited to see this progress.
On a scale of a year to a rabski, how long do you think this will take?
You’d probably cross from the lower-mid to upper- at say 1500. a 600 is probably ideal.
The trouble is finding compression drivers that like to go down to 300Hz. The lower you can go the better. While a 555 might be overkill, it works nicely there and new ones are available from LM/GIP (££££££££££) or equivalent from Lamar.
It’s basically @Wayward’s system, but with Bass horns instead of Lab subs and bigger mid-bass horns.
We’ve been in this place for 9 months now and mostly because covid, progress has been painfully slow. If the build-out is not complete by this time next year, I won’t be happy.
One thing that worries me - where am I going to keep the 911 during the building work?
I can look after it…
Do you have a nice dry garage?
Alternatively: bass floor horns / 15A/555 / Upper mid / Tweeter for a 4-way. But would required digital time alignment. And before you suggest a PC-based solution, this is @Jim, so nah, it needs to be an appliance, but Najda is no more. That said there may be progress in that respect elsewhere, albeit probably at a snail’s pace.
Hertfordshire.
Ahem, nice dry 36ft garage in new house, drop the Porker off when you come to housewarming/ bake off
I actually do now the m3 has departed. Brick one too
