I’d agree there’s nothing new about ‘divide-and-rule’, but the way misinformation is spread, the ability to create incredibly plausible fake images, speech and film footage, and the difficulty of accessing all of social media’s billions of echo-chambers in a unified and rational way has changed absolutely everything else.

Corbyn polled more constituency votes than starmer too in the recent election too - check it out.
The recent result so favorable to labour was down to the split tory vote, tactical voting and low voter turnout, and credit where credit is due, an effective labour strategy of targetting seats they could take off the tories by moving politically to the right and carefully courting media which previously favoured the tories. Not PFM lefty opinion, just matters of verifiable fact.

Gonna ask you one straightforward question: how do we elect constituency MPs in this country?
Should be quite easy to answer and fresh in the mind as we’ve just had an election. Stockpiling votes in constituencies already Labour and being roundly hated in constituencies you need to win does not make you a credible leader.
He was fucking shit, is still fucking shit and had 0 (Zero) chance of ever being the Prime Minister of this country.

Numerically the recent one was the worst.
Fortunately the vote was split, and they employed good strategies which maximised their result.
I think corbyn was a lousy leader, but by all acounts he is an excellent constituency MP, and popular - fair enough, we all have different skillsets.

You have missed a significant point - this turn-out was one of the lowest in history. Hence the depressed numbers.
Corbyn was a fucking disaster as Labour leader, a hopeless anachronism, and a hugely divisive influence within the party of his day.
He bears almost as much responsibility for the unending tory clusterfuck as the tories themselves.

Yeah, I agree with much of that.
However I think if you look at percentages, they don’t work too well either.
More relevant the the turnout is that voters are now
a) Voting tactically in ever greater numbers
b) Voting for a larger range of ‘mainstream’ parties than ever before
Winning with a vote share of 35% might seem bad if there were three choices. With 5 or 6 in play, then not so much. The whole business of general elections has changed dramatically in a very short space of time.

Paul @Mrs_Maureen_OPinion 's original statement was not about results. It was about election results. Election results are measured in the number of MPs elected. Corbyn’s 2019 election result (202 MPs) was worse than Starmer’s 2024 election result (411 MPs).

Well, I said that. Split vote and tactically going after winnable seats more or less infers they knew this and had a strategy which took that into account.
Only be your metric. Plenty of people measure it by votes cast, and this is always mentioned.
