Setting aside the ones used by tour groups, the balloon-tyred stuff is pretty much the same empty macho pose as it is in the 'states - unless you actually go inland in winter, which few do. I drove around Iceland several times, once in a Vauxhall Corsa and did several of the cross-country routes in my ex’s stepfather ex-Rikislogreglan Volvo 850T - RWD drifting on gravel for mile-after-mile on the quiet bits = Scrambling inch-by-inch through half-buried boulders on the worst bits, not so much - luck not skill, these need taking seriously…
Miss the place and the people, if not the fucking ex
Did similar in a nissan Micra, great fun sliding it through snow drifts , was being followed by a beast of a car at the time. Turned out his lady ran the visitor centre at the falls at Geyser and he followed us just to make sure we were ok. We were the only ones stupid enough to drive there that day.
The car was a bright red pimped out Toyota, later copied by Top Gear. Was a hell of a sight to see it bounding over snow drifts.
The Ford F350 (Custom Super Duty Front/Excursion Back) we had was a beast, I believe it was the 6.7L? Diesel engine was barely breaking a sweat even when overtaking cars on rocky tracks with the tyres at 10-12psi Sounded good at tickover too!
