Peter Brötzmann, 82.
Also should have been a meatman
Salvation came, according to her account, when she was sent to Oldham in a blizzard to interview a dwarf who had been at school with Cary Grant. They got on like a house on fire, sipping the Scotch he kept hidden from his wife in a kettle.
âWe were getting merrier and merrier. Suddenly the wife, who looked like Les Dawson, turned up,â she later recalled. âShe was furious. She saw this upper-class woman wearing a fur coat getting tipsy with her husband. So she threw me out.â
she recalled being propositioned in a Paris hotel room by a trouser-less David Niven, being driven by Steve McQueen in a Mini Cooper âat terrifying speed up and down Park Lane in Central London - mostly on the pavementâ.
She once inflicted the single best spontaneous put-down I ever remember hearing on the radio.
She used to be a regular guest on Stop The Week which was chaired by Robert Robinson. At the time Robinson was also fronting Call My Bluff. He could be funny and insightful but he could also be priggish and up himself. He once said something dismissive about tabloid journalists and Leslie, quick as a flash, said âOh, come on Robert, we havenât all got what it takes to be quiz show hosts !â. When the laughing stopped the only sound remaining was the hiss of air escaping from the punctured Robinson.
Not a well known name, but Van 't Hoff, and 18yo Dutch Formula driver has died at Spa in one of the support races for the 24 Hours of Spa GT3 race which starts this afternoon. Given the last death at Spa was also in a Formula car (F2 I think), it seems like those guys still have some work to do on the safety of the vehicles.
Really enjoyed him in The Kominsky method and Grosse point blank.
A great actor with so many brilliant films.
Although the film adaptation of Catch 22 did have itâs flaws I think he was perfectly cast as Yossarian. Also great in Glengarry Glen Ross although it is a powerhouse of film for all the acting.
Seemed a good bloke, too young to go
Quite the legacy having designed the Micro Seiki turntables aswell.
Unfortunate headline here given the context but interesting read.
Certainly achieved his vision of designing and making great sounding high end turntables. I wonder who will take Techdas forward, hopefully someone with similar talent and vision and it doesnât get swallowed up by some VC.
Gordon Moore.
Co-founder of Intel, which he got into accidentally as a result of a $500 investment. And the person who said that the number of transistors that could be placed on a silicon chip would double at regular intervals for the foreseeable future, exponentially increasing the data-processing power of computers.
Didnât he die about 4 months ago?!
Tony Butler. BRMB radio sports presenter. If youâre of a certain age and grew up in the Midlands youâd have been aware of Butler with his strong local accent, forthright views and a style of engaging with listeners that set the template for sports radio phone in shows subsequently.
On yer bike, Tone.
Theme music that was the right accompaniment for evenings usually ending in disappointment for fans of most 70âs clubs (except perhaps Liverpool) back then.
Not half!
Loved the fact he would interrupt callers, tell them they were talking rubbish (which they largely were) and promptly cut them off!
