Ah :upside_down_face:

My mother (now 88) got her Kenwood Chef in the early 70s. It was probably insanely above what my parents could then really afford. But it has proved exceptional value. Still going strong and still on her kitchen worktop. Most recently, we had to buy a new plastic liquidiser because sghe can no longer lift the original glass item. No problem getting the part at all. Not many appliances now 50+ years old you can say that about.

The biggest downside for the kenwood chef from a selling point of view, was that it was made to well.
Don’t currently use mine much, but still works perfectly.
A true icon of the day, just looked, was first released in 1950

That is a real shock

Very sad news.
A real ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’ cricketer.

Unfortunately maybe not much of a shock given recent events.

He deserved to play in better teams than he did. Very sad news.

It is sad. I spent hours watching him through the nineties. He was a fantastic player. Not inelegant but tenacious, and a scampering rotator of the strike, with a real cricket brain. Generally, a Thorpe innings was appropriate to match conditions and he had the game against pace and spin. England were mostly bad through that period but generally, where there was Thorpe, there was hope.

It felt to me like he was a key lieutenant of Nasser Hussain when he took over the captaincy, and brought in a ‘we lay down at all costs’ mentality. Vaughn was probably right to drop Thorpe for the 2005 Ashes, which felt a bit early at the time. No matter. That team had a platform built by the previous one, and GT was a huge part of that. England have never really looked back.

Quite tragic from reading the obits - great cricketer but personal life was very messy.

Just scrolled past because it would have been his birthday a couple of days ago and it made me sad.

6’6" talented lunk of a guitarist.

Married a Playboy Playmate, contracted HIV as a result of IV drug use, ballooned to 400lbs because of his meds and died of a heroin overdose in 2002.

On Thursday I attended the funeral of the husband of one of my nieces. He took his own life. No history of depression. On his way home, parked his car around the corner from his house and walked up into the nearby wood and hanged himself.

That is so sad John.
A desperate place for anyone to be where that is the only perceived solution.
