I will just throw this out here.
Okay scope has now quickly enlarged to buying some kind of Studer and/or a tape head preamp.
After Jay McKnight’s passing, his colleague John Chester has decided to close the MRL calibration tape business. Jay was a key figure in the world of tape and his calibration tapes have helped line out machines in. Studios and homes all round the world. If you wants MRL tape, you will need to order before December.
This Revox A77 is a 2T machine with 7.5 & 15 ips playback.
I only have one 2T tape, a 7.5 ips recording of an EMI Angel release with Michelangeli playing the Ravel Piano concerto. Sounds sublime, much better than the LP (or CD).
However, I do also have some studio tapes including one that Matt/Stu collected from a guy in Nottingham. Contains 4 ‘Northern’ tracks including The Joker at 15 ips. These sound great. I also need some Studer & high speed tapes in my life.
Charlie, do you have the means to play 1"tapes?
Guy only 1/2 and 1/4 inch
I thought half of that ended up in red oxide on my tape heads at Lopwell?
It plays on the Revox although that 2nd track is a bit knackered. The third song is a cracker, a great vocal.
Bottom left is the pick of the bunch, fabulous cover
(36) Phoebe Bridgers x Arlo Parks - Fake Plastic Trees (Radiohead) - Radio 1 Piano Session - YouTube
Need to get these tapes recorded before they become unplayable
Guy have you baked that Northern Soul tape?
No but I probably should.
The 4 wider tapes here are 1/2" once I had a closer look. Could potentially be interesting. One has the name Carl Cisco scrawled on it. He appears to have been in several ‘Northern’ groups ie The Buena Vistas,The LaSalles and the Antiques so who knows what’s on those.
I’m recently informed that officially Audio Related Tech in Chesham are no longer servicing and repairing R2Rs as a rule although they may continue to provide a service to some existing customers.
If they are Ampex (or some Scotch), I wouldn’t play them unless they were baked. Then I would duplicate them onto new tape stock (as well as a digital archive).
This is a hoot (literally, at 3:45)
It’s really about vinyl, I guess, so if the mods can think of a better place for it then so be it.
The jigsaw puzzle made me shudder
You could y’know start a thread, those are a thing.
