You know that LP you have to have and been looking for, for the past year and you’ve now found, but are umming and ahhing about, because it’s £300 ? Well, that’s pretty much any Album you would want to own in your new Reel 2 Reel tape buying world.
It’s too late Mike, we played Aretha’s Amazing Grace, plus Hunky Dory and some of Guys tapes like Al Green etc. The die is cast

Yeah I know, but on the other side if I don’t do it now it’ll be £400 then £500 and it will only keep getting more expensive. Although I’d rather not have to spend the money, if it’s an album that I love and it sounds like it does on tape then I don’t see any way around it. The recording and format is the reason something will sound like it does. No doubt my hifi journey is finished but for the moment I’m happier that I’m more interested in a format rather than figuring out what the next step is kit wise.

I don’t understand why more tape sharing ist happening, as a tape victim I just gave up trying to find media that worked an d the new stuff is too expensive
One day I plan to investigate hi res streams recorded on to tape as a way round this but not hopeful it will give the same playbacks good condition original tape like the one spider played on my machine when he visited
Haven’t given up tho as te teac looks lovely even when it’s not playing anything

Duplicating R2R is very time consuming, if you want to get it right. It’s much more complicated than using a cassette player to do your mix tape back in the 80s.
You need two R2R machines, knowing how to line up a tape machine for repro (playback) and calibrating and biasing the tape on your record machine. You’ll need decent metering and the ability to generate test tones, if you want to make sure that the copy sounds as close to the original as possible.
When I archive and duplicate one of my production master tapes, it usually takes at least two hour for a single album (ie one LP’s worth of music). A single 10.5 inch reel of new tape on a metal reel is about £85-90 now, twice what it was 5 years ago.
As for sharing an original tape, I’m not sure you will find many people willing to do that, as they are mostly irreplaceable.
Many years ago, I bought @jampals Revox B77 off him. Fabulous thing and sounded gorgeous but within a year I gave up on trying to find material I liked, for anything like a remotely sensible price.
Well things escalated rather quickly and the car is full.
Not often you get a chance on a studer a62 though!
What’s in that grey box underneath that other pile of stuff though… oh another studer a62.
