Reel 2 Reel - bottomless pit of faff, expense and hisssssssss

Lovely deck :ok_hand:

One of the best R2Rs IMO. My 2x APRs 5003V and 5002 will be staying in the very long term

Looking forward to trying this shortly. My old lp version is very tired & noisy. Only 3 3/4 ips but I expect it’ll be better than the record.

Sounds very good, much better than expected & better than my LP or dig version.

I’m not sure if it was ever put out on 7.5 ips or more recently as an áudiophile high speed 2T tape. Sometimes though even these 3 3/4 ips tapes are the best available option for hearing a classic album (to my ears) unless you’re lucky enough to come across a studio copy.

EDIT: It appears that Rhino did do a limited edition (350) release on R2R last month! for £224. Sold out now but that doesn’t seem a bad price really.

The reels seem to be in stock on the American rhino website but they won’t deliver to the uk.

Not that I own any but have you seen the prices of some fancy vinyl re-issues?

And it’s not uncommon for ‘audiophile’ tape releases to be £400-500.

In the context of those examples £224 doesn’t, to me, seem that crazy. Not saying I’d pay it but I can see why some, who could afford it, might.

It’d likely be the best sounding version you could get.

Definitely a relative thing. Always nice to remember a system is only ass good as what it is fed.

Yes, ass good.

Also you can easily pay £200-300 for a 50+ year old 7.5ips tape that may or may not work :grimacing:
