Shiny brand new second hand things in my system today

He missed a trick, should put gold dust on his facial hair.

1:16 so a fairly useful ratio. Presenting 188 Ohms into 47K. You might want to add a little secondary (or primary) loading to bring it down to 100 Ohms which seems to be a figure that suits quite a few cartridges.

It’d probably benefit from the wiring being re-done, perhaps twisted as well. It’s hard to see what’s been done but the transformers & case are nice enough.

It was cheap enough, if I like it, I will spend some money on it, so far it stands me £80.

I like some of those old Mic transformers. A pair of Altec or UTC units usually costs double that so given you also have a case it’s decent value.

Got the chance to try a Phasemation PP-300. Very nice cartridge.

Saw those in Yobadashi camera in Akihabara. Please feel free to describe the sound and what you like about it.

I’ve only been listening to the Phasemation for a couple of hours but it had around 100 hours on it already so I know it’s run in. So far I’ve not been able to fault it.

It has a very similar tonal balance to my Kiseki which I’m pleased about. It’s got a lovely weight to it on piano for example and the texture of a bow on double bass is spot on. Overall it sounds refined and open with plenty of inner detail on cymbals but it’s not forward or etched sounding. Very natural and very good dynamics. Quiet in the groove and forgiving of poor pressings. It’s all win so far.

How do you find it next to the Hana ML?

Bearing in mind that the Hana may not yet be fully run in, I initially felt it was giving away something in terms of tonal colour and impact in comparison to the Kiseki. However, once I stopped comparing, I found I enjoyed the Hana in its own right very much. It’s very even handed and I really couldn’t fault it. It’s kind to poor pressings and tracks like a demon. The Hana ML is definitely a cartridge that I could live with but it lacks the ‘magic’ of the Kiseki.

First impressions of the Phasemation suggest that it punches above its weight and I suspect it gives little or nothing away to the Kiseki. I’ll be interested to see how it copes with a variety of material but so far it’s a tempting prospect.

Nice things.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the cart ?

A Hana ML. It’s the upmarket one from Excel at £995.

:+1: Thanks

Very nice, although the potential of knob caption rotation is setting off my CDO already…

Pretty much a copy of the Clearaudio Champion looks wise.
