Shit you just learned (probably from the internet.)

Pop! indeed.

There were a few posts about it over in this thread yesterday. She’s now saying she’s getting lawyers involved

Sarah Montague on World At One tried (and failed) to point out that the people who would benefit would be those needing affordable housing whereas those who had actually been stiffed by a rigged market into paying more than they should would get nothing. So no justice then.

It’s just become such a standard trick of developers to start a scheme with promises of x% social housing, schools, social Centre etc to get planning permission, then later on just say “Oh, we can’t afford those”. About time they got properly roasted, whether through surcharge or prosecution I don’t care.
I wonder how much that lot have got away with over the years - a lot more than £100M I’d guess.

This single guy once left with £75M

The big housebuilders seem to be the apex example of maximising corporate profit above literally everything else except, of course, handing it out to themselves and their shareholders.

In particular they restrict the number of houses they build, in a time of desperate need, to keep the prices high. Well, you would wouldn’t you …

I know someone in that business
14 flats with 4 being ‘affordable’ at planning stage ends up as 13 at full price with the one next to the communal bins a bit cheaper

Somewhat to my surprise given what a bunch of Reform-voting woodentops they are nowadays, it seems Spalding was a pretty progressive place 230 years ago:

Today I learned that ‘The Pear of Anguish’ was A Thing in the late mediæval period.

Its use should be evident without further explanation, unless you’ve led an exceptionally sheltered life, in which case “Aw, bless!”…

That said, there are people who earnestly claim these were not torture devices, but merely oddly-designed and inefficient juicers… I kid you not.

Still, thoughtful of them to go to the trouble of engraving it so prettily. Craftsmen, eh …

Dropping a dollop of horse manure in the middle of the Piazza San Marco in Venice, when there were no horses in Venice, is borderline genius.
