I really liked the overall presentation and fun factor of Tannoys.
I had a set of 15 Golds, and then Reds in York, Lockwood, and then Pete’s GRF cabs (which had been modified).
I found the cabs made more difference than credited and didnt like the Lockwoods (despite others fan boy PoV)
Unfortunately the seller I bought my Reds from had knackered the drive units and I wasnt able to find someone to put them right (Lockwood dont have the skills anymore)
I tried a lot of amps and woudl concur that 20+W and PP had greater frequency extension and sounded best to my ears…
Moving the room around so they are firing down the room rather than across, and sitting further away, I can certainly see the limitations of the Zen with the MG15s (~4.5m away rather than 2m).
Should be more than fine for the majority I will be using them for, only an issue on a rare day like today where I have the house to myself!
A new valve amp would be out of budget now anyway and the only other amps I have is the Bryston B60R, Bantam Stealth or XTZ A2-300 so not really that suitable I don’t think.
In no way an expert and could be talking utter shite but the bantam is a bridged tied load so is able to deliver twice the voltage and current. Don’t think tannoys have that bad an impedance so although each amp sees half the impedance of the speaker (and the output impedance of the amp is doubled) the extra voltage swing and current is more benefit than not.
It does say they are suited to higher impedance speakers which I think the tannoys are?
Thanks for the recomendation Chris @thebiglebowski, the ~25wpc Bantam Stealth seems to work really well. More than enough headroom for my room/listening.
Bringing back in the CD-670NT for CDP/Spotify means I have space for the Thorens TD-160 so no need to wall mount which is a bonus! Just need to get the Thorens finished and arm mounted!
