SOYS: State Of Your System

FWLIW I bought my Pass Labs pre and monos from Emporium. I have nothing to complain about their service. I suggested a price given I was trading in, they countered, I responded and we agreed on a deal. A very nice bloke picked up my kit and then delivered the new kit. My amps had hardly been used so I was chuffed with the deal.

The PAP one that was linked earlier said 550 hz. I’m not sure what safely the OB drivers go up - Although I may have checked this once in the past. If not I will have to get my mic back and I can test that first before thinking about it too hard.

The big Tannoys use a 15" driver that goes up to 1khz; they do this but I’m not sure they’ll be that clean that high - you might be in break up modes by then. Depends how good your bass drivers are!

No problems with emporium with my speakers either

The Eminence LFII, with a horn compression driver atop actually sounded better than Tannoy 15" DC😜

The Cary is a very nice Pre … oodles of valve rolling psychosis to be had

There was a lovely Octave pre on the Wam too. German. Well reviewed as far as I know.

Have you heard it in your own set up, or in comparison with say an ARC Ref of some description?

A bit spendy but open to offers :star_struck:.

I seem to recall hearing the 300 and thinking ‘this doesn’t sound very tubey at all’, in fact it was pretty clinical in presentation, but that’s not necessarily what the 700 is like.

A friend had one for quite a while before going all in solid state with D’agostino gear.
Very nice TT and T , I rather like circuits sporting 6SN7’s / 6SL7’s over the usual 9 pin suspects myself

More a case of “Be aware of what you’re letting yourself in for…”. I considered buying it too, and may well have punted if I’d had the ££££.

ANUK depends where you are on the foodchain. I prefer some of their higher spec stuff to Kondo, FWVLIW, but then again I can tweak it if I want to change the presentation.

I’ve heard Octave integrateds and come away with the exact same impression. Internally they have complex, ‘feedbacky’, PCB-based circuitry that reinforces the subjective impression. The people themselves are also arrogant wankers to deal with.

Or you could stop faffing around and go Cocosan.

Cheers - Close but I think I would need the 511B version

A good friend had a set of high end Octave pre power and I and he thought they sounded clinical and hard. Nicely made, but that is all you can say about them in a positive way IMHO.

They sounded very much like Chord stuff.

I can lend you a Chord power amp and you can experience the Octave sound.

I’m detecting a theme here re Octave. My best friend has a chord pre / power paired with a Tim de Paravinci (sic) Exact cd player and Harbeths. The system has never ever impressed me in the slightest.
