This, having grown up in that world, some of the disbelief is insane. There are folks in the church I used to go to in Wrexham of all places absolutely convinced Trump is the second coming.
As Derek & Clive might say - ‘Have they read the fucking guide book?’… Basic Christian / Muslim / Buddhist / Jewish principals - Love thy neighbor in various guises, don’t kill, give back, compassion, forgiveness etc are decent human traits. Instinctually, morally, spiritually and intellectually these things ring ‘good and true’ - You have to go a fair way off the reservation (Mental illness far) to make the opposite right.
For once, a steak needs ketchup.
Sanitary towels absorb innit
I am hazarding a guess that US “Christian” programming with a more recent side order of social media echo chambers has had too much of an influence there, and from the experience of a friend of ours I am also guessing that there would be more than a hint of antivax.
And in other news

Yes, you have the added challenge that a lot of these folk believe that God literally heals people, and so they will often spurn genuine medical intervention in preference to praying about stuff.
But there’s also always been an eschewing of experts / science. Even when I was growing up, the scientific literature was pretty coherent that smacking was bad for children, but as the Bible encouraged smacking, that meant the literature should be ignored, or was the work of the Devil. So we got the wooden spoon with monotonous regularity, and not lightly either.
This is a pretty accurate look at that, but I’ll warn you it’s not easy reading: Ministry of Violence - by Talia Lavin
And yet at the same time under 100 miles away a Baptist church I grew up in managed to not do any of those things and still manage to not be a lukewarm watered down version of everything.
I suspect the main problem there is the silo thinking and lack of any external moderation. Church history has probably got examples of all of the failings you can pin on self proclaimed disruptors now to go with the positive impact of people like Luther or Wesley.
Sorry to read this; these were used all too frequently…
I see KH has managed to secure an additional 230 million dollars of funding and counting.
Makes me think she had secured promises of funding long before Biden formally pulled the plug.
Which may be the sort of forward planning that you might expect from a competent if possibly slightly ruthless political operator?
I liked that they waited until the Republicans had laid all their cards on the table and their convention was over before announcing this. Caught them flat footed. Shrewd.
I don’t see much strategic anything here - Biden should have gone at least a year ago, his frailty has been blindingly obvious for a bemusingly long time, and has been a gift to Trump.
I don’t know what to make of Kamala Harris. I do like that she’s young, and - despite the Right’s efforts to undermine her credibility - she is a very smart and highly credible candidate.
Being non-white and female is always going to be a mixed blessing from an electability POV, but it’s to be hoped the pros and cons broadly cancel one-another out. Old white guys are killing the US.
Not getting my hopes up just yet - the cancer that is Trumpism is malignant and tenacious - but Harris’s recent speeches have certainly had a verve and coherence sorely lacking from either Trump or Biden…
Prosecutor Vs Felon ?

Trump now saying he wants a TV debate with Harris,
That could be fun!
Harris already out of the blocks
“Before I was elected vice-president, before I was elected United States senator, I was elected attorney general of the state of California, and I was a courtroom prosecutor before then,” Harris said.
“And in those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type.”
The crowd loved that line, and Harris kept at it:
And in this campaign, I promise you, I will proudly put my record against his any day of the week.
As attorney general of California, I took on one of our country’s largest for-profit colleges that was scamming students. Donald Trump ran a for-profit college that scammed students. As a prosecutor, I specialized in cases involving sexual abuse. Well, Trump was found liable for committing sexual abuse.
As attorney general of California, I took on the big Wall Street banks and held them accountable for fraud. Donald Trump was just found guilty of fraud on 34 counts.
Let’s also make no mistake, this campaign is not just about … Donald Trump. This campaign is about who we fight for. This is about who we fight for.
Does look like the gloves are off, and if Trump decides to face her, he’s going to take a battering.
About time someone publicly called Trump out for all he’s done instead of trying to be the nice guy. That approach just doesn’t work with scum.
