The Wonderful World of Turntable Design AKA: Dave's Fugly World Of TT Wank

Needs whammy bar for delicate speed adjustment. Also neck to support ludicrously long tonearm.

We need a hero to step up here. In the meanwhile I have stored my warped records under the mattress with my money.

You’d need quite a lot of warped records to make buying one worthwhile. Can only think of two I have.
Guessing if you have a biggish collection with some expensive albums it would make sense.

A group buy would probably be worthwhile

Hasn’t anyone here got an Aga?

Somebody posted this on pfm. Quite interesting, though I’d like to know what goes on in the temp-controlled room to balance channel outputs - armature centering, magnet movement or part unwinding of coils?

PS especially for @freefallrob

We do. But no warped records. Send me your first pressing Blue Notes and I will see what can be done.

They also wouldn’t have to put lacquer on the coil former if they used lacquered wire to begin with. It’s a nice film though. My first MC (in about 1983) was a 103 & it was a cut above the MM’s I’d been using, certainly in terms of dynamics.

The way they are doing the winding I suspect the channel balance will be pretty well matched. What they might be doing is just adjusting how firmly the coil is pushed up against the damper, how precisely perpendicular the stylus sits in relation to the damper & rear pole piece, and, altering the azimuth if it needs it.

Won’t they be using lacquered wire anyway, to avoid turn-to-turn shorts?

Would have thought so

One of the things they don’t do is dressing the wires coming off the coil. It’s better to have those 4 wires going through the damper with the tie wire that connects the back of the cantilever to the (usually brass) mandrel which gets clamped in place. The 4 wires can then exit in such a way that they can’t influence or restrain the coil’s movement at all.
But the 103 is a relatively budget MC so I guess you can’t expect everything.

No. No, I don’t think I will.

That’s fine and dandy, nice and portable, but doesn’t solve the problem of where one would park the Artic with the software ?

Lol, can you imagine the amount of sand everywhere?!

Not in Brighton
