What I'm watching (Series 2)

So far, so weird

Annie Lennox on BBC4.

She used to be a regular when we ran The Angel in Marylebone in the early 90s.
She used to come in at opening time, have a double vodka then leave. Then, once she got used to the idea that nobody was treating her as a “star”, came in at random ‘quiet’ times.
Such a sweet soul. And fiercely Scotch.
Everybody who worked there was into music, many of the customers were from the College of Music. But little interaction.
It took a long time to get her to open up. N and I were the only musicians, so we would discuss our musical influences with her.
Ultimately, she opened up. My tastes for jazz/fusion aligned with her own. I commented on my dislike of ‘vocal’ jazz, citing Flora Purim and Cleo Laine, she loved them.
It was 4 months of musical jousting. I loved it, and I like to think that she did too.

I wasn’t enamoured with her work post Eurythmics, but I became a lifelong fan of HER.

Yet another take on Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece.

Nicely shot, strong cast and quite a decent watch, if you’re into that sort of thing!

Bit slow at the start but worth persevering IMO.

That being a Guillermo Del Torro film makes it a must for me. Really excited to see it.. I bet it’s sumptuous

Cinematography is outstanding. The story itself feels a bit slight, as if there’s something missing, but overall a decent watch.

Awful, which was a surprise given the protagonists but an iffy script & plot and them being unlikeable characters made it a difficult watch. We didn’t even get to the end.

The ending was literally the only good thing about that film!

Were they both hit by a falling satellite?

Thought this was really good, also liked haunting of hill house but thought Bly manor was boring

Only one episode in but fucking hell, Trespasses (C4) is excellent. The tension, music & Gillian Anderson as alcoholic mother.

Gillian Anderson you say.

Entertaining re-working of the Stephen King story. With some serious swipes at American corporate culture & TV channels in particular, along with a nod to Arnie and a decent soundtrack. Definitely worth a look.

I’d dismissed that as just another desperate remake. Will give it a watch now.

Not the first good review I’ve read of that.

It’s supposedly a lot closer to the book than the original Arnie one was. Anyhow we were entertained. I’ve read a mix of reviews now having seen it. I try not to read them before.

“Death by Lightning”

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt31121364/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_death

Death by Lightning dramatizes the stranger-than-fiction true story of 20th U.S. President James Garfield, and admirer Charles Guiteau, who assassinated him.

Absorbing true life period drama. Matt Macfadyen puts in a really strong turn as the manically unhinged Guiteau & Michael Shannon is great as the co lead Garfield.

Available to stream on netflix.

Finally getting round to watching it from the very beginning again.

Christ on a bike it all came flooding back - I don’t think I’ve ever watched anything as evocative. The pilot episode has it all and could stand on it’s own as a story in itself.
