Off to see the new Matrix film this afternoon with Sam.
MmmmmmâŚno new ideas & much navel gazing.
Enjoyed it for what it is.
I was listening to a radio programme called the Reunion which brought together several of the people, including Richard Curtis whoâd been involved in the making of the film Love Actually. I remember really disliking this when it first came out but the Reunion made it sound like fun so decided to watch it again.
Jesus Christ it was worse than Iâd dared imagine. Yes of course itâs all still emotionally overwrought, sentimental bollocks clumsily pushing its trigger buttons but I hadnât noticed then how much of the âLad magâ culture and casual sexism that was the norm back then (2003) ran throughout it.
Some of it is in jawdroppingly bad taste and not at all in a good way. Hard to believe that itâs almost achieved cult status in some quarters. Itâs a truly awful film.
It even manages to cement its awfulness by including the ultimate one trick pony - Hugh Grant.
Hugh Grant was good in the recent Guy Ritchie film The Gentlemen (recommended) playing very much out of type. I donât mind him as a person, his heart seems to be in the right place.
Neither do I
Just got a bit weary of the rom-com type rubbish where he always seemed to play the same style of character.
Iâll give âThe Gentlemanâ a try at some point
Donna and I went to see this film on our first date, kinda got mixed feelings about it
My memory of it was that it had been more oriented towards appealing to the female members of the audience. Nothing wrong with that had it been the case but itâs awful to and about women.
You must have been keenâŚ
Yeah me too.
Iâd agree with you at the point he kept making those awful rom-coms, however as a case for maybe reconsidering his acting talents I would suggest this is worth a watch -
Yeah, Iâll concede he was very good in that
Hugh Grant milked the foppish Englishman shtick for all it was worth⌠fair play to him. His character in âthe gentlemanâ was refreshingly cuntish and a pleasant contrast.
Puts me in mind of Daniel Craig. Seemed to play the same character in everything. Then I saw him in Knives Out. Fucking brilliant.
Why hasnât anyone else watched Donât Look up yet? Probably the most interesting (& important) film of this year.
It sounds interesting but itâs on Netflix isnât it?
Yes, nowhere else afaik
